Property Overview

“The Farm”, as referred to by family and friends, has been a haven of beauty and serenity for its current owner for 30 years. 17 bucolic acres of graceful trees, a shimmering pond, and spectacular mountain views reveal nature all around you.  This iconic property balances the desire for timeless architectural design with a sense of privacy and nature’s bounty.

As you arrive through the gate, the beauty unfolds in stages. From the front entry planting of pin oaks lining the driveway to the park-like setting of mature growth trees situated in front of the main home on the property; to the stocked fishpond and its nature habitat of waterfowl to the stone walls and boxwood hedges; to the majestic views of the Sierras and the double Allee of pin oaks amidst pastoral fields and grazing sheep. The sense of privacy and exclusivity surround you as you walk the 17-acre property. Yet, in reality you are just 10 minutes from the nearest Whole Foods, restaurants and shopping.

Surrounded by white painted redwood and four board fencing, the property is defined by Austrian pine trees at its borders. The property is graced with gravel paths and boxwood hedges, surrounding a manicured lawn. Even the asphalt is mixed with concrete to appear aged and less formal.

The Park:  The area directly in front of the main house has been called the Park because of its trees and grass……Large elms, blue spruce, apple and pear trees, Hawthorne, and cottonwoods define the space.

The property consists of a main house (9725 sq ft) with attached three car garage and a guest house (3700sq ft) with attached apartment and farm office.  Assorted outbuildings include a two-car garage with heated storage room and workshop, a playhouse, the well house, lambing barn, and storage barn.

History of Main House:  Classical proportions and scale with light streaming from every window were priorities in the design process with Bob Arrigoni of BAR Group architectural firm.  The house was built 1996-98.  The current owner desired to create a home that was welcoming and comfortable but with timeless design. General contractor Michael Doherty of Reno was responsible for construction.  The materials were selected to be authentic and natural, from limestone, to heart pine to slate floors and the stone fireplace.  Working with Margaret Simons, of William Turnbull and Associates, the interiors were designed to create a sense of comfort and contentment.  Hospitality and welcome were cornerstones of the design elements.   The land itself was master planned by John Wong, SWA group (website) who is renowned for his land planning projects worldwide, such as Dubai, Shanghai, etc.  John worked with the owner to site each window, creating light filled spaces.  He also designed the double Allee of trees and pond, which were the essential elements in creating the natural setting of the house and its environs.  The home and surroundings were designed with a sense of place and timelessness.

Upon entering the property, you pass the Guest house and additional outbuildings.  Driving to the top of the property, you are greeted by the main family home.

MAIN RESIDENCE

The home was designed to be graceful and grand, yet warm and inviting.  Ascending the Sierra granite stairs of the front porch, you enter through a 12-foot custom entry door into the front entry hall. You are greeted by an elegant, curving cherry staircase leading to limestone floors of black and ivory. With high ceilings punctuated by dramatic molding and an antique carriage lantern, the walls are highlighted with Charles Edwards Designs Crystal sconces and detailed wainscot casework ascending the stairs.  Designed for entertaining, this setting has been the sight of wedding photos, formal dinners and holiday gatherings.  The center of the hallway is reserved for a ------ foot Christmas tree and garlands embracing the staircase. The House was designed for entertaining. To either side of the entry, you are welcomed to a formal Living Room and Dining Room. As you progress further into the home, you encounter more intimate spaces as a series of casework portals guide you to the heart of the home.

The house consists of seven chandeliers. The door hardware (knobs, hinges) on the 6-panel solid wood interior doors is by Sherle Wagner. The lighting designer was Eric Johnson and Associates and is a Vantage system. A dumbwaiter services all three floors for moving items to attics and second floor.

The house has radiant heat, as well as a ducted heat and air conditioning system.  The Game room over the garage has its own furnace. The house has a sprinkler system, central vacuum, and alarm system.  The wood fireplaces are equipped with gas lighters and the mantels have electric plugs for holiday decorations.  The sound system is Control 4. Security cameras (front gate and front door, mudroom door) are Control 4 and Lumos.

GUEST HOUSE

THE FARM RENO

The guest house was home to the current family for seven years before building the Main House.  It has been the residence of friends, family, and guests over the years.  Having previously been an unattractive red brick structure, the home was painted white, and a pergola added giving a new sense of life to the structure.  To the original building, the owner added an extended home office, garden room, master bath and dining room. A whimsical approach was taken to the design, which greets you as you enter with a black and white checkerboard floor in the kitchen and breakfast nook.  A charming window seat near the island is a perfect place for morning coffee and watching birds perch in the tree lined planter outside.

The home consists of 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, living/family room, and dining room, laundry room, office, sunroom.

APARTMENT:  A charming studio apartment with full shower and kitchen, heated by electric baseboard heating.

FARM OFFICE:  Heated office for Farm manager and seasonal workers with a restroom.
